People sometimes refer to our work as 'simple'. At first we took that as an insult, now we see it as the best compliment we could get. Indeed in our opinion it makes no sense to add all kinds of non-essential functionality for the sake of adding it or because the client saw it on another site. We rather tend to question each aspect of a project and strip things to their essence. If something doesn't really make sense or it's not to the point, then we advise against adding it. As a result this will make the website easier to understand and improve usability and accessibility.
True, at times it is tempting since from a technical point of view there are hardly any limitations. So far we managed to build about every system exactly as conceived without too many technical compromises. Weirdly enough the most evident and easy to use navigation systems sometimes appeared to be the toughest ones to produce. The in-text navigation we created for mortierbrigade for instance is extremely obvious and fluent from a user point of view. Nonetheless it took us more than a week just to program the effect of pushing the non-selected text aside.
